SNOWSHOE HIKING IN THE HIGH PEAKS REGION

We join Dave Mallard, Education Workshop Coordinator for ADK on a snowshoe hike to the top of Mt Joe near the Adirondack Loj High Peaks area. Dave will show us what equipment he carries in his pack on showshoe hikes into the backcountry and we will visit the Mountaineer in Keene Valley for a look at proper gear for snowshoe hiking

SKIING,SKI JUMPING, SKELETON RACING, ICE CLIMBING

We will be visiting Whiteface Mountain , the Mackenzie Intervale Ski Jumping Complex and the Verizon Sports Complex to look at these exciting sports. Later Ian Osteyee of Adirondack Mountain Guides will teach us the fundamentals of ice climbing with a surprise ending.

THE BEAUTY AND CONTROVERY OF SNOWMOBILING

Here we will take a look from 3 different perspectives on the sport of snowmobiling. Chip Keiffer, the Publicity Director from the Town of Webb, will review the economic impact snowmobiling has on his town, Jim Jennings from the NYS Snowmobile Association will join us as well as Neil Woodworth of ADK to explain their associations views of the sport.

ICE OUT BROOK TROUT FISHING ON PONDS AND SMALL STREAMS

Rich Garfield of the Ausable River Sport Shop will be joining us for some early season pond fishing and a stop at a classic boulder strewn brook trout stream in the northern reaches of the park.

SEARCH AND RESCUE TRAINING

Ian Osteyee will be joining us again along with Pat Munn of Whiteface Mountain as we answer the question “what would happen if these gondola's ever stopped?” These seasoned veterans train under very adverse conditions not unlike the type encountered under an actual rescue. We will also be working with Search and Rescue of the Northern Adirondacks (SARNAK) and some DEC Forest Rangers on a mock search and rescue of an injured hiker.

VISITING THE BIRTHPLACE OF THE FIRST GREAT CAMP – CAMP PINE KNOT

 Jack Sheltmire from SUNY Cortland will lead us on a grand tour of this historic landmark that William West Durant built over 100 years ago. We will also be making a special stop at church Durant built on an island about the same time. This church is still active and is celebrating their 125th year anniversary.

VISITING THE LARGEST HOT AIR BALLOON FESTIVAL IN THE NORTHEAST

Join us as we travel to Queensbury for the 33 rd annual Hot Air Balloon Festival. It is truly a beautiful site to watch as over 100 hot air balloons take off at once and we are fortunate to get a ride up in one to get a “bees eye” view of this spectacular event. We will take a side trip to visit a firm called Pictometry who has a revolutionary new way of aerial photography that will help safety within the Park.

HIKING NOONMARK AND MCKENZIE MOUNTAINS

Both mountains offer exciting views from their rock strewn summits. We will be stopping at the famous Noonmark Diner for some pie and visit with an 83 year old gentleman who has recently become a 46'er.

RUFFED GROUSE HUNTING FROM CRANBERRY LAKE

Rick Kovacs and Angie Oliver from Packbasket Adventures join us on an early season grouse and woodcock hunt. The action is fast and furious as we try to harvest some of these elusive birds. We will also take a side trip to The Ranger School to visit with Chris Westbrook as he details for us the technical nature of his school.

THE SPECTACLE OF WATERFALLS IN THE PARK

We will be taking a journey down a little known road called Tooley Pond Road near the Town of Degrasse and visiting all of these “hidden gem” waterfalls that abound in this area. We will also be stopping at a handicap accessible falls thanks to the DEC just north of Degrasse.

THE ADIRONDACK MUSEUM IN BLUE MOUNTAIN LAKE

Our last stop of the season takes us to the Adirondack Museum to view the incredible collection of antique boats, trains , carriages , cars etc along with their newest addition The Great Outdoors: the Adirondack Play and Adventure Area. This is a must stop for anyone visiting the Park.
